About

Hi, my name is Yanran Zhu, I go by Yan, or Veruggie.

I specialize in independent filmmaking and music video production, which often entails working with limited budgets. In this realm, I typically find myself wearing multiple hats, taking on roles such as director, producer, set designer, photographer, and more. As an artist, storytelling is my passion, and I thoroughly enjoy sketching down and bringing to life my creative ideas.

Reflecting on my experiences as an international student in Canada, I've grappled with the perplexing tendency of communities to self-segregate based on ethnicity. Whether it's Chinese students sticking together or similar patterns among Black and Brown communities, this phenomenon persists beyond academia and seeps into the workplace.

As an Asian woman with an accent, I've encountered the stark contrast in treatment compared to, for instance, a white person with a European accent. Despite my efforts to assimilate and adapt, I've often felt unfairly judged due to my race. This reality sheds light on why first-generation immigrants often exhibit unparalleled determination, striving to provide for their families in unfamiliar territory.

One day, it dawned on me that learning a culture transcends mere language acquisition; it involves understanding the environment, lifestyle, and even subtle gestures. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I've faced microaggressions that underscore the challenges of navigating spaces where inclusion and acceptance seem elusive.

As people from diverse corners of the world settle on Indigenous land, we're confronted with the imperative to coexist without succumbing to judgment, hatred, or discrimination. I firmly believe that education and media hold the potential to foster peace and understanding. Together, we can forge a more inclusive Canada—one where mutual comprehension flourishes, nurturing a society characterized by healing and growth.

That's why storytelling is incredibly important to me. I believe it has the power to heal and bring understanding, awareness, and love towards one another. Through sharing our stories, we can bridge divides and foster empathy, creating a more compassionate and interconnected community.
